I used to get this error, maybe once a month where the system would just hang for no reason.
It now appears to be getting more frequent and its done it three times today already. It didn't usually happen when I was doing anything specific, but its mainly done it today when i've tried to access my hard drive. It also happened once when I was using media player.
The message I get is (on the blue screen of death)
It says that its a "Machine_check_exception" and at the bottom of the page it has
***STOP: 0x0000009c (0x00000004, 0x80545FF0, 0x82000000, 0x00070F0F)
Any idea what it is, as its beginning to piss me off now.

Ok...
the weather has been hot recently, maybe thats why its happening more often? is the machine stuffed somewhere with no air vent?
Are the drivers old? try updated all your devices to the latest STABLE drivers.
if its when acessing the HD, maybe you have some bad sectors or something, run the HD tool that comes with Windows XP and see what it comes up with

this is an MCE error, meaning this is a critical hardware fault. difficult to diagnose really, remove all peripherals from motherboard, leaving only basic running hardware, and see if the fault happens with nothing. its most probably some form of PCI card playing silly buggers

I'd go with the software approach before you start pulling your computer to bits personally.
Also check the event viewer, if there are write errors on the disk ti will be reported there under 'System'
