Maybe he's realised he isn't actually taking the team forward and that he feels its for the good of the team that someone else takes over. Spitting his dummy out would be him blaming others, like the ref, for us being knocked out.

not trying to wind you all up. but thats the way it seems to me. should be the managers decision on who is captain. he's been captain for nearly 6 years, why going out in the quarters of this tournament any different to the other 2?

I think he's thinking mroe of retiring in a couple of years, why be captain if your planning on giving up, you'll have no drive, Gerrard,Terry and Rooney will all see the next 2 Euro's and world cups so why not let them be the power on the pitch?

Exactly... the other reaosn that IMO, G.Neville and Campbell should retire from Int'l footy now rather than later...
