The finger pad on my dell laptop is pissing me off, basically it can be fine for ages then all of a sudden it will totally screw up having a mind of its own, for instance i can drag the mouse somewhere, but the cursor will fight trying to go back where it came from, or a totally different direction altogether

mine does that but only when its gets something on its surface, like oil or a liquid.

just buy a retractable laptop mouse, job done.

Steve is it a Dell Lattitude C600 series? OR d600 series?

We have many of these go wrong at work. You'll need a new finger pad and keyboard.

from another site:

maybe it can help

Go into the BIOS (F2). Press Alt-P until you reach "Page 4 of 7". Under "Pointing Device" change the setting from "PS/2-Touchpad" to "PS/2". Reboot.
