After last nights indoor training the manager told me that I will more than likely be going up-front (depending on performances in pre-season training obviously).

He said that I offered 1 thing that the other 2 strikers couldn't and that was pace. I really want to improve my stamina this season and wondered what you guys did? Is it just a case of going for a run every other day? The pitch where we play is a short distance from my house so would be able to run over there and go for a bit of a jog. How long for though? an hour perhaps? More?

How about improving speed? I'm relatively quick over short distances which has given me the edge in training but will obviously have to do it over longer distances on a Sunday. Is it even possible to get quicker? or is it something that is just natural?

What about your diet? I eat a lot of shoot most of the time and like to occasional Magners will be cutting some of this out though shortly.

From what the Manager was saying last night (and I believed him) our team have a real chance this season of getting promoted. I want to help us get there and I want to be in the best shape possible for it. Any hints or tips on the above would be useful.

Cut out the beer and plenty of running id say.

Im no expert on fitness etc though.

Maybe you could ask Kat as to how she got.......ill stop there.

its to do with your build, keep the way you are, try not to get bigger!

vitamins as in the ones you can get from the pharmacy or take in plenty of fruit?

Spotted some Puma Kings on the bay might get them in time for Sunday's session. Hope they're as comfortable as people make out.

Really want get fit (well, fitter than I am now ) and impress the new gaffer. I'm slightly worried as I have to compete with 2 other veteran strikers this is my 2nd season and their 7/8th

I play on the wing, really enjoyed it last year. need to not get injured this year. only got 20 games last year 13 assists and 1 goal though so not all bad.

I'm alright when it comes to injuries. There were players though who were really injury prone and it used to annoy the fcuk out of me.

Just recently though we've all been doing proper stretches before training on both sunday and Thursday. Can really feel the difference when you start to run around!

get a rubber attached to your waist and somebody (strong enough) pulling from the rear and try sprinting forward...or use ankle weights...

was doing this during athletics training.

to build stamina you need to do some base training, basically its really low intensity cardio work but for like an hour, its not hard just really boring. What you need to do is get a heart rate monitor, you then work out your rmax heart rate(MHR), then when you are exercising you keep it in a certain percentage of your MHR, if it goes over you slow down if it drops below you speed up.
You won't believe how easy it is like i said the hardest bit is how boring it is,

Mix this with interval training where you sprint the walk, jog, sprint walk jog etc. to exercise different energy systems.

search the net for "base" training should make it more clearer.

Make sure you warm-up ie light jogging, before stretching to get the muscles warm, don't stretch cold muscles.Also don't bounce when stretching either.

yeah don't do it, i'm no where near touching my toes, about 4 inches off! did the sit and reach test at uni and i couldn't even reach the box.
Don't bounce though, hold the stretch for 10 seconds if its for a warm up or 15 seconds if your doing progressive stretches (to improve flexability) you don't need to be in massive pain just to a point where you can feel it.

just searched using google and there's a lot of Triathlete stuff on there. Swimming and biking etc. that doesn't really apply.

What I'm after is a suitable running program for someone like myself who is relatively fit who want's to improve stamina.

Or perhaps I should make one myself?

3 runs each week for 3 weeks for about an hour each. Then 3 runs for 3 weeks at an hour and 20 and so on...

what do you think?

We all sit on the floor and put our legs together. Pain is unbearable. We were all told that if we contrinue to do stretches like that before and after training we should all be able to grab our feet come the start of the season.

Yeah base training is from tri-atheletes premerily but the have to have immense endurance, and its the same principal, your heart is still a muscle whatever sport you do, and that seems to be the most efficient and effective way of training for endurance.
