Just took the 1.4 16v sport engine out and took it to bits. The head gasket was blown and the valves had started eating into the cyclinders what would of caused that?

i reckon the timing was out. But there are big circular grooves at the top of each cyclinder. i'll try and get pics.

never took one of these engines to bits to see the pistons, but there may meant to be grooves in the pistons for the valves like there are in alot of engines, or is it definitely because the valves have been hitting the piston crowns?

you mean valves hitting the pistons, not cylinders.
those are valve cut-outs
