i'm happy with the speed and spec of my current one, but as i need to replace it now, i might as well upgrade
what sort of things are about for £400?
not too bothered about gaming power, or sound quality, just need something with a CD/DVD writer, 40Gb hard drive (or more) and a decent screen and battery life
i've seen the NEC Versa C250, anyone know if its any good? or any other ideas?
ta muchly.

Take the extra warranty off to get the cheapest price. Just ordered a Dell laptop for my mum, they seem to be highly recommended.

yup, spotted that. a whole 94 quid saving
only thing i'm not keen on is the chunkiness of it, but i've heard good things about Dell too
I like this - but it might be too flashy

i have a Celeron at the moment
all i use the laptop for is internet, msn, basic photoshopping, and aquiring music, nothing too major really
i'll have another look at the dell site, and see how much the pentium upgrade is.

looks good, but i would remove the service cover, and enlarge the screen to 15.4" and 6cell battery - comes in at 480 quid or so.
Also, as long as it has a mobile processor you should be fine, otherwise it will drain your battery and create stupid amounts of heat.
Could also check ebay for a dell, nec, sony vaio etc might get something a few years old but decent etc

for 419, i can have the spec i want plus the 15.4" screen
i might just do that, that seems reasonable, and im sure i can blag 20 quid from somewhere
i might not bother with the bigger battery... but.... for 11 or 12 quid, i might as well get it.
