well according to the crucial ram detector its 8gb max!!!!! lol
the computer is very fast compared to my last comp which was a shitter, p3 700mhz 512mb ram!! lol
i want this comp to be very fast, i dont really use it for gaming, just for web browsing, downloading, checking mail and cd burning...
so based on that would 2gb be sufficient and noticeably much faster??? (4 x 512gb DDR2 pc2 4200)

and internet browsing/downloading/check mail depends mainly on your internet connection. You can have the best specs PC but if it is on dial-up, well....

really?
i would have guessed the opposite, plus greater ram modules have higher CAS latencies.

Bart, mobo can only supply a certain voltage to each module, if it has to flow to all 4 DIMM slots, you can get flutter

last time I knew, Windows could only recognise 4GB max - though this may well have changed now - anyone else heard any different?

i have a 8mb broadband connection
so say 2 x 1gb DDR2 pc2 4200 would be better than 4 separate modules, can anyone esle confirm this?
it works out more expensive this way?? but also means i can upgrade it further in future??
also means i can use my current 2 x 256mb modules aswell with the 2 x 1gb! but does that mean that all the modules will have to be the same speed?? think my current 256mb modules are DDR2 PC2 3200

if you buy the 2 x 1GB (which i think you should - by far the most common thing), then don't use the 2 x 256 as well, i'm not sure why but i know it's not recommended

no monkey, go for branded stuff, you will notice the difference, trust me.
aPk yes thats correct, XP32 home/pro can only address 4gigs, (some sources say 3gig in reality) but XP64 can address up to 12GB now.

ok cheers guys
what sort of brand names should i look out for then in 2 x 1gb modules??
and why would it be best that i dont use my current 2 x 256mb modules with it??
do memory speeds have to match in pairs etc?? and would a faster speed be better/compatable??

If you have a CPU with PAE, then Windows 2000 and XP will support upto 64gb of physical memory.

corsair and ocz are the best 2, but anything that is named and has low timmings (close to 2-2-2-5 as possible) is ok.
and the 2x is better than 4x becuase it will run your memory in dual channel mode, which is muchos faster.

ok, il spend a little extra and buy some good branded stuff for piece of mind!
so bare with me, i currently have 2 x 256mb DDR2 PC2 3200 non parity, and i think its CL3
so for best performance, would it be best if...
1) i keep my current 2 x 256mb and get 2 x 1GB DDR2 PC2 3200 400mhz aswell
2) i scrap my current memory and just have 2 x 1GB DDR2 PC2 3200 400mhz (speed matching my original memory)
3) i scrap my current memory and have a faster 2 x 1GB, e.g. DDR2 4200 CL4 533mhz
correct me on any of the above if its wrong
cheers guys

What you need to do is keep you 512mb set up and not bother. For what you use your computer for you won't notice a difference.
The best way to keep a computer fast is to delete old files you don't need, not download junk off of the internet and not fill it up with too much junk...
You will only need more memory if you need to run very large applications. I run 3gb of memory on my machine, though if I were to take it down to 512mb for every day usage I probably wouldn't notice that the memory had gotten smaller.

how can i check if it can take higher???
ive been looking at some corsair ram, and the higher the mhz speed of the ram the bigger the CL number e.g. 1gb ddr2 667mhz is CL5! i thought the lower this number the faster it is??
but would a faster speed really make a difference in any way??
