That's a good idea. Would work out for me in my 2.0 car cos it aint gonna be going out at night.

I was thinking that, It would work out cheaper on certain cars, but it still doesnt seem right people monitoring when you are using your car

Hmmm, actually:
The 'DriveTime' unit will capture and send us data relating to the vehicle location, date and time. We will use this data to monitor at what time the vehicle is being driven and to identify when any additional premium is due. We will also use aggregated data from all of our 'DriveTime' customers to further improve our understanding of risk.

Think all this means is that they find out what time you are using your car at, and how well the scheme is working

I would like to know what the aggregated data actually is before I get a system like that put in my car. Insurance companys can't really grass you to the Police for speeding. But I would still like to know a bit more about that first... Wouldn't like a letter from them saying "You drive your car too fast mate!"....

I enquired about it in detail a lot and they basically allow you 20% over the speedlimit or something and then they would pass it on to the police or take action themselves....

So 120mph is out of the question 
I would find it a serious inconvenience on my daily car too because at least once a week I drive after 2300 to come home from ski training. I'll work it out actually...
Premium: £800
Drivetime Premium: £480
Monthly charge for driving between 2300-0600 (Based on 7 times average): £175
Yearly charge: £2100
Yearly total: £2580
D'oh. No good for my daily car then as I drive late and early quite a lot for work and training....

i just wouldnt like the thought of only bein able to use my car at certain times of the day and having to come in b4 11pm just to save on my insuarnce wen it wil go down with no claims anyway if u dnt drive like an arse!

I would imagine that they would use the information to raise your premium if they thought you were a speeder. I am interested in how this works actually. They would need to track your exact location, know the road you were on and know the speed limit for that road before any action could be taken. I would be quite amazed if they did that! But I guess they do.
I think devices like this are the future of motoring though... Especially as a private firm has taken on the project before the government.

Does TomTom know the speed limits of roads? I thought that was only part of the speed camera information. I think it would be a hell of a lot of data to process, especially at 0830 on a Monday morning in the rush hour

A company I used to work for had trackers fitted to all the vans. You could watch them on the computer, see a pitcure moving along the road in the direction and side there on etc... showing times, distance, mileage, speed and fuel consumption. It can even tell when the engines off and a few other things.
