having a read of http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/5359426.stm
some of the ideas are a bit wacky, but some sensible.
What are peoples opinions on limiting the power/cc of newly qualified drivers?
For example
Drivers arent allowed cars over 80bhp in their 1st full year of driving.

i also heard on the radio this morning that theyre on about making learners take lessons for a year before they can sit their test.
what a load of bollocks. thats about as stupid as saying drivers who pass on their 8th attempt are better cos they have more practice

erm dunno, the only reason why lots of young drivers are in road accidents is becasue ther is so many young drivers ont he road nowadays, 20 years ago 17 year olds couldnt afford cars!
Im sure if you work out the number of accidents back then to the number now over the % on the road it would be very similar.
I feel that when people reach 50 they should have a re-test , old cooonts are the worst and wheni worked in a Bodyshop i would say 70% of accidents were old coonts.

nis - 50's a bit harsh. Def re-sit, take some sort of compitancy test at 60 though. We'll hopefully be that age one day. I know how i'd feel being made to re-sit a test at 50.

i dont think you should have to resit your test at 50 tho. my mum and dad are on their 50s and imo theyre not in need of a retest

I've been driving for nearly 5 years and still dont have a car with more than 80bhp
I always think its daft when you see these young lads and lasses bombing round in a high powered car (that they really cant handle) so it would be a good idea if some sort of power restriction came into place for the 1st year or 2 of their driving.

thats not the only factor though. One can do plenty of damage in a 40bhp car

How about having a system where drivers pass based on their ability to drive?
Oh, hang on a sec.....
Wether you make them wait 1 year, 2 years, hell even 3 years its not going to make a differance. The simple fact is that the first time your left to drive on your own (or with yur mates as passengers) you're bound to try to show off a little

Agree its not the only factor but at least by restricting the power of the cars you are going to slow them down a bit.

I don't think it matters that much. As said you can still kill yourself or others in a car wether it's 80BHP or 800BHP. It's being mature and not risking other peoples lives that counts. But if they think it will work, then i don't mind. I've been driving 4 years, so it won't affect me. It may push premiums down, but i doubt it.
I also think that old people should take a re-test. I see an old guy everyday on my dinner. He can't walk properly, it takes him 10 minutes to get in and out of his car. How the fook can he drive safely? The only reason they don't die in accidents is they drive that bloody slow.

Tis a bit silly IMO.
I drove like a prat in my 90bhp sport when i was 18, the car is still capable of speeds which are above the law, you only have to go 40mph round a tight corner with a lack of experience and thats it.
The fact i never had an accident i put down to just being plain lucky!
I was driving a 230bhp corsa and a big old slow auto merc barge when i was 21. I nearly crashed the merc on a roundabout in the ice as it was a blomonge with no feedback to the road and the rear end stepped out (at 30mph!) wasnt driving like a loon or anything. I went flying across the road, and managed to just controll it avoiding all other cars. Never crashed the corsa, someone drove into it but hey they were older than me! And in the wrong! (as insurance proved)
So TBH i dont think the power thing is an issue. Yes in extreme circumstances like 18yr old with scooby, but even then i know a guy who is a millionaire his 1st car was a p1 when they were brand new he never crashed it. Hes now my age and driving a 360 to my knollege hes never crashed that either!
Id say its just boys being boys weather they have 40bhp or 400 they are going to try and show off its called being young and stupid.

I reckon it makes sense to limit what cars you can access. The laws are there for bikes - where if you crash your are likely to only kill yourelf - so why not for cars - where you are quite likely to take a few people out with you...

straying from the point a little.
New drivers have as much right on the roads as us. If roads are to busy for YOU, seek an alternative
