Type 2.
you'll not get a split screen one cheap though. bay windows are cheaper, but not as cool.

23 windows are about 10k for a rustbucket.
you'll be looking at 3 or 4 grand for a knackered 9 or 11 window splittie.

I love split screen campers, but I don't like the roof windows on the 23 window ones. I quite like the pannel vans tho!

No no no!
A VW Type 1 is a Beetle (reagrdless of age)
A VW Type 2 is a camper (regardless of age)
A VW Type 3 is a Squareback, Notchback, Razoredge etc etc
A VW Type 4 is a late model Type 3 pretty much.
That in the pic is a splitscreen type 1 (camper), looks like a 15 window.
They are expensive even for a shitter but of course the earlier the better, my mate bought a 53 split panel van, solid as solid gets underneath (it's an import) but the nose was battered - still cost him a lot of Łk!
Rob, the bodyshape and chassis are pretty much the same, the main exterior differences between splits and bays is obvioulsy the nose and the engine cool air vents - on a split they are in the rear quarter, on a bay they are right up behind the last side window.
The you have all the differences in bumpers, engine bay covers, side doors, windows, side rails etc etc
Best advice is to buy a splitty for as much as you can afford and take as long as you can afford doing it up.
