Ideally a 19" monitor i think is 1600x 1200 but I could be wrong ive not had a 19" monitor for some years now

And what exactly is getting stretched out of proportion?
1280x960 is just really stupid, 1.333333333, how is that anymore correct than 1.25?
I hope you are running 1280x960 on a 1280x1024 native screen just for laughs.
Use whatever the native res of the screen is mav.
Anything else on a tft is just really really stupid.
