i'd say 4 and 5 centre back personally and 6,7,8,11 are the four midfielders

5 and 6 are generally center backs (terry and ferdinand)
4 and 8 are the center mids (lampard and gerrard)
apologies for using english players as an example

I just cant see the point in them
What was wrong with 1 - 11. Did a perfectly good job for how ever many years before they were introduced. Just another way for clubs to make more money by selling shirts with names/numbers on the back of them IMO

No, they serve a purpose, and it's not as if companies take your money without permission and give you a shirt with someone's name and number on it.

"In team sports, the squad number, shirt number, jersey number, sweater number, or uniform number is the number worn on a player's outfit. The number is typically displayed on the rear of the jersey, often accompanied by the surname, and sometimes it is displayed on the front also. It is used to identify the player to officials, other players, and official scorers; in some sports, it is also indicative of the player's position."
There we are.

So if players still played in shirts numbered 1-11 people wouldnt be able to identify out who was who

Some commentators don't always follow foreign teams, I know if I see a player on the ball with '77' for Corinthians, I think 'Marcelinho' immediately.
Job done! No emotional baggage comments here.

I on the other hand would have no idea who was wearing number 77 and upon a close up where his name is visible on the back of his shirt i would think 'marvelous'

Depends what footballing culture your from...
England, 1 is GK back four would be 2,5,6,3 midfield would be 7,4,8,11 and attack would be 9 and 10
In South America, 1 GK back four would be 2,4,3,6 midfield would be 9,8,5,10 and attack would be 11 and 7.

Gerrard is number 8, and before that he was 17. He only wears 4 in an England shirt 'cos Lampard took 8? 4 is a CB number, 6 is a CM number!
