i found two plugs joined to gether with some of the wires cut so i earthed the brown/yellow wire and it flashed something up on the dash.
this is the results (i have no idea what any of it means)

65 Carbon Monoxide (CO) potentiometer Low voltage
31 Engine RPM signal (crankshaft sensor) No signal
31 is probably wrong because it wouldnt start if there wasnt a crank signal.

its possible that you dont have a screw on the afm then. sometimes turning it 1/4 a turn can stop the light coming on. has the airfilter been messed with lately?

theres 2 types of afm. one has 4 pins, the other has 5. if you have a lambda you need the one with 4.

cheers guys. i found a brass coloured flat head screw next to the wiring plug on the AFM so i turned it 1/4 - 1/2 a turn to the right and took it for a short drive. the ecu light stayed off this time where as it used to come on by just starting the car.
will keep an eye on it over the next couple of days but its looking good!!
