Coming along a country road , changing into gear and I lose all drive.
Towed home
I hope to god my driveshaft has popped out.
This should be in Help and Mod I know but its kinda urgent , and if you look at my post history you will see that I have done help and mod advice dry these days.
Fucking gutted

Hopefully it will be the shaft, it seems to be a problem quite a few people have...

Dead diff, it wont be the actual gears itself, they tend to go one by one not all together at once. It could be a dead CV too, as the diff sends power through the path of least resistance, if one goes you loose all power.

Dead diff ? What would cause that ?
New gearbox if it was ?

The diff can give up due to wear just like most other components on the engine and gearbox.
I think you can replace the differential quite easily. Though a new gearbox (second hand) would cost a lot less.

Bearing in mind that it is quite an unlikely thing to break, I would say a broken CV is a lot more likely. Did it stop with a bang?

In a straight line or when turning? If it was when turning then it is almost certainly a CV as they clonk when they are on thier way out. Easy, but very messy fix you have yourself

Yes when turning , but also when I came on and off the accelerator it would jolt to the side a wee bit.
I can rev the car freely and I dont hear anything broken etc ?
Is the CV Joint noticeable enough when I get it jacked up ?

Yes, your driveshaft will not be very atatched to the hub or gearbox. Give it a rattle about and see if it is loose, it will more than likely be at the hub side of the driveshaft.
I would expect you to be able to hear a rattle, because the broken driveshaft will be floating about with nothing but the CV boot holding it in place, but it's worth checking for a broken CV first or a popped out driveshaft before worrying about broken gearboxes and diffs.

Hmm grabbed the passenger side driveshaft to see if thats what it was as thats what I expected and it seemed pretty solid , but that was it on the ground

What engine was it? as I said in another post..
All I know is that mine leaked for about a month, not a huge amount..
Then one day the gearbox chucked the driveshaft out on the motorway.. Towed it home, hammered it back in and havn't had a problem since.. lol

Mine does this. Passenger shaft. Only occasionally it pops out. Last time it did it. I jacked it up in the middle of an A road, and wacked it back in with a brick. Dumped the car back on the deck and drove off. Gives me rage It comes less than 1cm out of the box, and doesn't leak any oil visually. Doesn't make any noise when it goes either.

Somethingto do with the spring loaded clips being weaker maybe? Or perhaps lowering the car puts more stress on them I noticed the nearside shaft is a lot shorter than the offside one

If it pops out you should replace the clip. Everytime you remove a driveshaft you are meant to replace the CV clip on the gearbox CV.
