Now that I have a car worth cleaning...

I've been looking today at my local motorworld trying to figure out whats what. Suprise suprise they all claim to be the best & the staff at the shop knew feck all

So...

1. I've heard about these clay bar thingys, think I might get one of these as the results seem good

2. Also a lot of people use them meguiars wash mitts? Are they hyped or are they actually quite good?

3. Shampoo. Saw some meguiars gold class shampoo & it looked fancy

Whats a good shampoo to use?

4. Polish. Got autoglym & meguiars tech wax at the moment. Always used autoglym on my silver one before but I hadn't discovered tech wax then.

When I've used tech wax on my green one it came up quite well

Any other reccomendations?

5. Alloy wheel cleaners. Not got any at the moment, used wonder wheels in the past & wasn't very impressed

Saw some meguiars long lasting gel stuff in the shop how effective is this?

Just need some general pointers really

I use Meguiars Wash Mitt, Meguiars Gold Class Shampoo and then Meguiars Water Magnet towels to dry it off with.

Then Meguiars tech wax.

On the wheels I dont really use anything to clean them as try and make sure they dont get clagged up by using Muc Off Silica Wheel Seal as it forms a barrier between the wheel and brake dust. Makes it loads easier to wash off.

Autoglym Glass cleaner for the glass obviously. Have tried a few different products and these are definately the best.

I am going to try P21S wax next as have heard alot of good things about it.

Whats P21S wax?

I know on some cars certain wax really brings out the colour, don't think the colour silver can really be enhanced that much, its more a case of which looks the shiniest

Oh and I use Meguiars applicator pads to apply and Meguiars cloth's to buff off the wax

1. Clay bars are effective.

2. Meguiars wash mitts are of good quality and help to reduce scratches etc.

3. Gold class shampoo is rated as one of the best, or Megs hyper wash but it comes in a gallon container.

4. Autoglym Super resin polish is one of the best value polishes. Also you can use the NXT tech wax after polishing. Collinite 476 or Poorboys Nattys blue are popular wax's.

5. Meguiars Hot rims is a popular choice for the wheels. also meguiars Endurance tyre gel.

I went over mine with a nachine polisher and some 3M FinesseIt at the weekend. The results are wicked, even though it did take me about 2 hours to do

Think the polisher is about £100 though so maybe not for your average car cleaner

for met colour such as your silver it is best to use a sealant as your finishing product (instead of carnuba waxes). It should bring out the met flake better. I recommend Menzernas Full Molecular jacket.

Worst thing about Silver cars, you can spend hours cleaning it and it does'nt look much better than if you went over it with a bucket and sponge.

It was clay-barred a couple of months ago so I don't think it will really need doing again.

That forum is good!

Give a users opinion on things instead of the manufactures, seems like I need to buy:

wash mit
another bucket (for the 2 bucket method)
waffleweave thingy
mild claybar
and some form of shampoo dependin on what they have (probably meguiars)

I agree with that to a certain extent

When I used to wash my old silver car it would look alright, if I polished it then it would look a bit better

When I walked in & saw the car on Sunday I was bowled over with how clean it was! Could tell that more attention had been payed to it!

Seeing it like that has made me want to keep it that way

Polish and wax are a seperate process, You first polish the car, then the wax goes on after like a layer.
