I'm not sure on the hosting packages out there nowadays but thought I'd give you out stats to give you an idea...
Bandwidth depends mainly on the content you'll be hosting -- if you're going to offer a garage/gallery function then expect it to be much higher. We transfer around 300Gb/month at the moment.
Space wise we have 8.2Gb of content (mainly the garages), and 1.4Gb of databases (3.5 million posts).

so say i went for a package like this
» 1 GB of web space
» 30 GB of bandwidth/Month
» 8 Mysql databases
» 100 Sub domains
» 100 FTP accounts
» custom FTP address
does the 1gb of webspace include the size of my database and all forum content. would be no-where near as big as yours but just need to know how they work it

Most providers specify a seperate size for the MySQL databases.
1&1 (www.1and1.co.uk) for example give 6Gb webspace, but 100mb MySQL limit.
As we don't use a web hosting company I'm not sure what's on the market at the moment but maybe someone else know a good provider?

Tim I'm with 1&1 at present, and sooon to leave them... on the business package, get CRAP performance, downtimes, allsorts... there only interested in getting your money & dont give a damn about providing a service which should be worth the cost...
Also, the way they automatically renew domains/contracts and only notify you AFTER they do it, is in breach of there accredition agreenment with ICANN.
This is an extract from ICANNs website:
“Are registrars required to give renewal notices to domain name holders before the expiry of a domain name?”
“Under ICANN's Registrar Accreditation Agreement domain name holders have to be sent an email notice prior to a domain expiring. The email address will be the one you list on WHOIS, so it is important for you to keep it up to date. If the email is sent to the email address on WHOIS, and that address is no longer valid, the Registrars may little other chance of contacting you.”
By not notifying me, it results in the extension of a contract that I may not have wanted and would have cancelled should I have received a renewal notice. This is convenient for 1&1 but as in my case, has been to my financial detriment.
I am on the lookout to host elsewhere, at present a £200 per annum budget...
been recommended to ASO, unsure if you have heard of them??

Only trouble with US hosting is the latency. Much cheaper though in comparison

ASO hosting comes in like
quote: Super (about £157 per year if paying per year)
- 4500MB Space
- 100GB Bandwidth
- Cpanel
- Unlimited SQL databases, email accounts, etc.
Large (about £105 per year if paying per year)
- 2500MB Space
- 6GB Bandwidth
- Cpanel
- Unlimited SQL databases, email accounts, etc.
MikeLamb - tell me more...
liamC - there are a few things about dreamhost which I dont like... hence why they are not an option
Tim - I'm aware of the latency, but whats a few hundred ms compared to a minute JUST to pull of a simple SQL query...

Like what mate?
I've been with them for years now and never had one spot of bother? Excellent service, cheap as chips, unreal amounts of space, and they're always very good with their support etc

only thing i think is a crock of shite with heart is there download policy - apaprently you can't host any of your own music (mp3s etc), even though you own the copyright - remember Ants having a problem with them (posted in OD).
Personally, i use www.i-websolutions.co.uk - uk hosted servers, not resellers (co-located somewhere near the thames i think) and are pretty cheap. Never had any problems and have full cPanel/MySQL (which i noticed a lot of hosts 1&1, hearts etc have their own cacking panel).

Heard dont like downloads, true. They have automated systems so if your account uses more than x% of the servers resources, it will be suspended. Only one of my customers have been suspended for this & they had a 40mb file downloaded 400+times in an hour. If you want to host sites like that cheap, host it in the US.
