Headgaskets blown
Good compression in Cyl 1 & 2........very little in 3 & 4.
Im at the point of wondering if its worth carrying out the repair on the 1.8 8v or fitting another engine
Anyone got any words of wisdom / encouragement

I know
If I were you, I'd get the head off, get it checked out, then bang it back on with a new gasket.
or, buy another engine.

Robin, Ive got a receipt here infront of me for £350 from Star Performance for headworks [remove & fit new guides, seals & surface & decoke, new plugs, oil, filter, water] thats only from 12 months ago, maybe 10k miles.
2L 16v transplant is forever becoming more & more appealing

Head is easy to do on them mate, just get it skimmed and a new gasket, bolts and timing belt..
At least you know its gonna be fine for a while yet, there pretty bombproof engines..

Its only been a year since last head overhaul
Is it easy diy or job for a garage??
Im limted with the tools & knowledge & to be frank its too cold, wet & shitty to be doing a driveway repair of that size!!
Ive been quoted £400 + VAT to get it done local, inc skim & new oil pump & timing belt.

It had been getting used daily up until 2 months ago when it broke on its previous owner, he was unable to fix it & I bought it off him hoping for an easy repair.

400 quid is an absolute rip-off...
50 quid for parts plus 4hrs labour I would think.. £150 quid is a more reasonable price..
Oh yeh and I fail to see why it needs an oil pump??
