You all know the saga of my car now I imagine.
Rebuilt the engine, made absolutely sure I assembled it correctly, to all torques/angles etc, new gaskets, oil, coolant. Timing is spot on.
Tried to start it and nothing. Traced it to a complete lack of spark... except for a small, weak spark when you turn the key to III (just before trying to start it). When you try to start it, it cranks over, getting good compression and fuel.
So far I've replaced the spark plugs, HT leads, dizzy cap, rotor arm, dizzy itself, coil and the ignition amplifier module that mounts onto the back of the coil, as well as swapping the ECU for one that Adam sent me. Checked my loom and cant see any breaks/burnt wires. All earths are secure and have been cleaned to ensure a good contact.
So what the FUCK am I missing? Are there any relays in the ignition system that could have failed?
Much as I'd like to bin the fucker and move on, I dont have enough money to do so at present, so need to get it running.
Help.

I don't really know much about this sorta thing, but i think it would be worth looking at the earths for corrosion etc. as well as the fuses, as one could be on its way out but not completely gone if you know what I mean !!! What about the battery or alternator, are they in good health ??

Battery has been put on charge every time I've left the car, so it's fine. Alternator was replaced earlier this year IIRC, again, in good health.

does the car have a crank sensor? what does this engine use as a trigger for the spark????

Uses a hall effect sensor in the distributor, which I've replaced.

are you getting fuel... if you aint then its the crank sensor.... whats the flash codes if any saying. code 31 would come up regardless due to the car not starting...
is the coil producing nothing.... is there power to the coil.. ie 12v's

Yeah, power to the coil. Fuel is getting through, can smell it when you try to start it.
Not done the fault codes yet, I'll attempt a paperclip test tomorrow...

Code 34 - Map Sensor Low Voltage
Could that be it? Obviously the engine wasn't running when I did the test...

Map sensor is the plug next to the header tank cap. About an inch along on the left from the header cap. It's a green plug iirc
Check to see if it's plugged it properly.

Done already! I'm not some novice you know
So it's plugged in right, could that be the reason why I'm not getting a spark?

Yeh. The low voltage thing had be wondering for ages. It looked like it was plaugged in but wasn't... Take it the plug wasn't full of crap and stuff and it is seated correctly.
Don't know where it goes or what it consists of. Heard of pipes splitting on it I think, but that wouldn't make the car have no spark...

The car uses a dizzy and coil though, I don't see how faulty sensors can prevent it from sparking... Unless I am thinking these engines aren't as simple as I am lead to belive.

All I can think is, if the map sensor is faulty, as its on the same part of the loom as the coil/amplifier, it could be losing the voltage through that?

ash when you say its not sparking, i take it you have removed a plug, earthed it & then tried turning it over to see if there is a spark??
also when you say you can smell fuel, have you visibly seen the injector spraying in the inlet (remove the plastic housing & watch it as you try turn it over again)

Yeah, if i set it to TDC on cylinder 1, so the rotor arm is lined up to fire spark one for instance, when you turn the key to III there's a weak spark, but then nothing after that when you're cranking the engine.
Its the same for any cylinder, if its lined up to fire, you get a small initial spark but nothing more.
Never got to fitting the black TB cover, left it off to check it was fuelling in the first place. I cant see any fuel, but it's defo coming through, injector/butterfly is wet after you try turning it over.

as you said you checked all earth straps, the 2 on the head near the alternator too?
tbh I'd just get another ignition amp & see if that works, also how clean is the connector to the coil?
