thing is i want to lover my car about 40 mm, ive seen "spring kits" advertised for around 70 - 100 quid, are these just shorter springs?? and are there any upsides/ downsides to them???

They are shortened and stiffer springs, the general accepted rule is that upto 40/50mm with out changing shocks is ok, anything after that you need shortened shocks. Although people do just fit 60mm springs without changing the shocks and havent had any problems. All down to personal choice really.
When lowering you'll notice the ride will get stiffer and less comfortable than standard but handling will be improved slightly.
I wouldnt pay 70-100 for 40mm springs, keep your eyes on the classified section on here and you will get them a fair bit cheaper.
