Yeah the guage has been playing up for a while by being eratic to be honest and has just started to go mad.The car can sit on the drive at idle showing a temp of 120 but it does it as soon as you start it.The fan also kicks in when its needed.

Sounds like the connector for the temp sender is getting earthed on something.

Doesnt it earth anyway?, as there is the connector that fits onto the sender then the spade connector that slides onto the side of the engine.

Remove the spade connector from the sender, and put it to an earth with the ignition switched on.
The temp guage will go off the scale.

See, when you were stopping the car, the spade connector must have flown off, touched the head/inlet, earthed and shot the guage off the scale.
Then when it touched the sender, it worked again
Good to hear its sorted now,lol
