Could somone shed some light on this one...

Just been looking at the cost of getting a re-map done on a Punto (just out of interest for now). The company that does it charges £350 and claims an extra 35 bhp from the 1.3 CDTI engine. I was just wondering why it costs that much, the work isn't done on an RR, it is completed in a matter of minutes as they are uploading a new map onto the ECU using thier laptop. I know it costs a few quid to make the map in the first place, but still... Seems a lot as EDS phase chips are about £100 cheaper, and you get more stuff with them

AFAIK, most places don't write their own maps, they buy them, and I guess they're not cheap

If you can get hold of the maps, you can make a packet.

its easy to make a chip, but costs a lot to reverse engineer an ecu to write a map that simply uploads to it.

your mainly paying for the r&d

Does £350 sound reasonable then?

Its not just a case of turning up, uploading a map and leaving. Normally it needs reading out - can be up to 30 minutes, then emailing to the programmer who would apply the changes to it then emailing back to the tuner on site who would do the upload. Thats a few hours all in, also factor in some cost to get the data about the place, then liability of frying the ECU if you get half way through writing the map and something fails.

Most of the places who do it cheaper will walk away in most instances.

What happens when they forget to put a rev limit back on and give you a death map?

Yeah obviously if you get it especially written for you then there are some things to think about.

ps. you can do me a favour if you're on a Fiat forum, I need a rear bumper for a Seicento preferably in base blue.

ed, you don't need a rev limiter, rev limiters are for dummies.

My nova didnt have one, i knew when to change gear though, so I never broke it

its a bit like traction control, abs and all that, for girls

Yeh they mapped it on their RR, think he loaded a base map for similar modded car (similar mods), then tweaked it, then adjusted my cam positions and then kept running it on the RR and then tweaking it a bit more.

Was on Jamsports RR but it was Wayne Schofield @ chipwizards who did it.
