Right, What is the law on website copyright?
I mean for example, if you found a website you liked and then coloured in different colours and used different content would it still be copying the site?

What happens if its a flash site and you have edited the flash and put it in your own html file?

All IPR is down to what you can prove in court. It's difficult unless you have detailed back records of what you have done.

How do you edit the flash file
...and, there's always 'back records' as long as http://archive.org exists.

Decompile it. There are programs which can do that.

Fair enough, didn't realise it could be done properly with a bit of software.
Copying someone elses website is gay, talentless, wrong and is proof 'with it's own domain name' that you're a thief IMO.

I downloaded some templates, i then proceeded to edit it and to learn from it. Ive decided i like what i want but it still has a similar design thats all.
Ive not copied it, just used the template for a basing.

Also the fact that i cant trace the owner of the template means i cant get in contact to ask if it would be ok and if they wanted some payment.

Of course you have - the look is intellectual property in the same way that the programming is.
You can't steal either.
Debatable whether a claim would stick against a derivative work based on a template though. Depends if there was any loss to the author of the original.

what about if its not a business and its just a website for personal use.
Also the fact that i have no way of getting in contact with the author is also a problem.
