make sure the battery terminals are tight, I thought there was something wrong with mine, same symptoms as yours, go to turn the key to start the engine, and click...everything goes off...
I forgot to tighten up the live terminal after replacing the bettery

if the lights come on, then you turn the key and they go dim with no clicking on the starter motor then the motor is at fault.

clean the bat terminals with emry paper, and the contacts on the leads. Re-fit them to the 'charged' battery.
You lights should work from the moment they are switched live. The starter motor has no bearing on them
Sounds like the battery is buggered to me... def not the starter. Dont go messing with it yet.

when the ignition is on, and your lights are on ( main beam ), you turn the key and the lights go dim if the starter motor is at fault as the power is drained.
thank you please
