I'm looking for my first house at the moment and looked at a nice one tonight which is steel framed.
think i read a while back that this was a bad thing and that either insurance was hard to get or that the lenders were reluctant to fund the purchase of a steel framed house.
any one have any info?
just done a quick google, and there seemed to be mostly plus points.

Some Mortgage lenders will not give you a mortgage on steel framed houses...I found this when looking for a house last time..
I am with Northern Rock and they said no way to steel framed or flat roofed houses.

i figured it was something along those lines, but i'm not sure of the reasons behind this thinking.
the only bad point i can think of is thermal bridging across the wall cavities.

isn't it because the mortgage companies security is the bricks and mortar

there's still bricks and mortar on the outside leaf.
it's just that the frame is made of steel instead of timber or concrete

We did a survey on a house a couple of years back and found out it was a steel frame. The result was that the people that wanted to buy it couldn't get a mortgage for it.

There are a few factors why insurance companies dont like Steel Frame houses, the main one i have come accross is due to the fact that if by any chance the house suffers from any subsidence the cost of the remedial works is crazy as replacing any section of the structure is so much more difficult than concrete or timber.
