Ok heres the story so far:
I bought a Mk2 Golf GTi 1) Because id always wanted one. 2) Cheap for me & Jade to both drive & insure. 3) Because this one was going for a song as it has engine problems & had given up wanting to start.
I spent the next couple weeks removing all the ignition parts & renewing various parts until she started, very lumpy - juddering with strong pertol smell from the rear end!! Further investigation found that cylinders 3 & 4 are not giving the correct compression.
I then got offered a 2nd 8v GTi, this one was running but has a cooked clutch & some accident damage - picked it up & handed over £50 notes.
Father wouldnt let me keep 'another car' at his house so I took it round mine & in true adam D style started stripping bits off....neighbours must love me
So ive got 2 golfs to make one good one from!! Ive already stripped & sold what I can from the second one (Interior, Exhaust, couple panels, loom etc so thats paid for itself & then some!!) & im about to begin the task of stripping down BOTH engines to see whats what....im hoping I can use the head off the 2nd one onto the bottom end of the 1st one & not have to swap the whole thing!!
Heres how it looks today before I got rained off:
Started stripping a few bits out-
Dunno if this would make any difference at all but No4 camshaft bearing cap (sits between cyl-3&4) is well...its not there, its been butchered off & bodged!! Could this perhaps do anything to weaken it???
The white beast
Hopefully something to salvage from here
Hopefully have more updates soon pending on the weather
I would also like to highlight how good it is to have a good spacious tidy garage to carry the work out it -
Next on the agenda is to remove both heads, pick the best one to work with, maybe send it off to be skimmed, reccon the injectors, paint camshaft cover, get a gasket set & some oil & filters from VW, erm scrap the white beast before I get an asbo & start the rebuild
Any comments??
To be continued...

Quite simple really, the head was only reconditioned on the black one 10k miles ago....& thats it fucked again!! I know the white one is good, runs well & is strong & i can remove it & change it over without the need to for skimming, it only cost my £50 & theres many times that in parts to sell which ive been doing & i'll still have plenty spare bits to keep for myself.

Other plans to be completed in time :
Tidy up surface rust in engine bay - mainly on battery tray.
Fit new badging all round
Fit new Hella smoked fog lamps
Decide whether to get single lamp conversion or keep the current set up.
And pending funding :
Full system stainless Milltek Exhaust inc 4-1 manifold.
BBS LM rims

did it have no compression on 3+4?
maybe all it needs is a camshaft bearing cap

Black one was £400 & white one was £50.
£450 for both but ive sold £110 worth of bits from the white one so £340 it owes me
Ive bought a few other parts too new battery, leads & plugs etc too but hope to have it running for less than 500
Been told I could get £50 for power steering parts & £20 for gearbox so might remove them too

Colin they dont have a bearing cap there on the 8v's.. Every VW 8 valve engine I've had has been EXACTLY the same as yours..
I'll whip my rocker cover off the MK3 and take a pic if you want proof.. lol
First time I saw that I shat myself, still dont understand it.. lol

Yeah its been pointed out on a golf site lol
Apparently hydraulic heads only have 4 caps, its meant to be like that & theres an oil spray between 3&4 whereas the others are solid metal tappets & cars with shim bucket tappets have all 5.

I was always told they were expensive to insure. Thats nice to hear.
Have you done any car work before this ? If not well done at attempting it. I'm sure you will learn alot. I would like to do something like this at somepoint Even though i wouldn't know where to start.

Its about 400 for both of us (shes on provisional) or 200odd just myself.
Ive done lots of small bits, changed exhausts, springs, radiator, brakes, done plugs & oil service, small body repairs...never dived into the insides of an engine though, but im wanting to learn. Im just being let down by lack of time, lack of a good workshop/tools & the weather what with working on the drive!!

How many no claims do you have ?
Yea i know what you mean. It's not the right time of year for this sort of thing. Gets dark too early and pisses down with rain 24/7
That quite a bit of work you have done I would like to be "mechanicaly" minded. Maybe at some point i will do one of those college courses once i have finished the course i am currently doing
Good luck with the project and keep us updated if you get much done!

5yrs NCB
Im not even scratching the surface tbh, im not 100% sure what is wrong with the troubled lump & ive at best got a head refurb & new clutch/cam belt to fit with no previous knowledge on any of it. You dont need to go on a course to do any of this, just get fired in, take your time, buy a haynes manual & make sure its ok for your car to be in bits without it putting you up shit creek!!
