When I bought my laptop I qualified for a upgrade to Vista, just done it now. Wasn't actually free though, had to pay for shipping. Still, not bad!

Thats because you got your computer before OEM copies of XP were being shipped with upgrade vouchers...

Yeah 6 months is too long - perhaps 2-3 months ago might get the upgrade cheap - mostly PCs bought since Xmas.
