Seen one in good condition at a garage but the only thing that is putting me off is its got 120,000 miles on it. Anyone got one with this kind of milage? if so how does it run. the rest of the car sounds like it is in good condition and its got service history etc.

Other option is another one that is 77,000 miles and a better colour (smoke grey not red) but its £500 more.

anything else to look out for?

i was tempted by a newer sport but i like the thought of a standard gsi. the current plan is to get it as mint as possible and then sell on in a couple of years when i can insure the car i want

Plus if i got a sport it would probably end up with a gsi kit etc anyway

SMOKE!!

Valve stem seals are notorious on these engine's..

When you drive the car, dry and speed up then let the engine brake like pulling upto a junction... tap the accelrator and look for blue smoke, get a mate to follow if you can..

Think i will be paying the extra. the cheaper one sounds nice but the more expensive one has aparently been garaged etc and has a lot of service history so it sounds like a better deal. Plus the garage that is selling it has just serviced it and replaced one of the rear wheel bearings aswell as giving it a full mot

not true. majority of these engines are fine up to 100k+ depends on how the engine has been looked after. you had problems with yours, lots of problems but thats because the engine was hammered.
