Hey just,
Just thinking here. When it comes to the time when i want a bigger engine (still a fair bit away though). I was thinking of new car. 106 GTI or 205 GTI if i could ever afford the car and insurance though.
I was wondering how much do you think it would be to convert my corsa to a 1.6L ? Probibly 16V - Inluding the engine, which would be 2nd hand and medium milage on it i would think.
Does anyone have a very rough idea on how much this is likely to cost ?

I converted my car from 1.4 16v to 1.6 16v for £600, which included the engine, new gaskets, new headbolts, SBD idler rollers, and a new engine mount, plus a few other bits (fluids, random tools etc)
1.0 - 1.6 16v should be about the same, maybe a little more as you'll have to do a bit of wiring, and get a new radiator.

£600. Thats really quite a good price!
Where did you get the engine from ?
Did you do the work your self ? Or did you go to a garage and say "I want this converted to a 1.6" and they got all the stuff for you 
Also, i'm guessing the conversion was worth it ?

I sourced the engine through the classifieds on here, but had to drive about 125 miles or so each way to get it.
I also fitted it myself (with a bit of help from broster on here), in about 3 days, in september, so they were shortish days.
I had basically NO experience before, just the basics, but it's all pretty easy to do if you watch what you're doing when getting the old engine out.
I think a garage would charge you about £1000+ for the labour.
The other alternative would be to buy a 1.6, as they're cheap now

And yeah, even going from 1.4 to 1.6 it was worth it. I'd have another 1.6, but not another 1.4.

Ah so you didn't go to a garage. Well that makes it much cheaper because you don't have any labour to pay then. Just the price of the engine and other bits.
Do you know kind of 1.6 you have ?
I also have no experiance in this field what so ever lol

I thought this thread was going to be about converting your car into a 1 litre.
I was going to suggest a GSXR 1000 engine.

Would have to have been running a hairdryer motor for a 1l to be an upgrade lol

It was an X16XE from an Astra, but they're also found in Corsa 1.6s
I really don't know about labour charges at a garage, but I'd guess at about 1600 including parts, which would get you a corsa 1.6 sport.

£1600 thats an awfull lot of money. Woldn't pay that much i don't think. Theres a C16XE on sale here for £300 ono. I have only had my car for 2 months though, so don't know if it's too early to change engines

Didnt think the X16XE came in the Astra, thought it was the X16XEL?

I guess going from a 1L to 1.6 would require new brakes and stuff as well ? Which would cost more money.
And i don't think the engine will be a straigh swap. Or would it... ?

Yeah, you;d need AT LEAST the brakes from the 1.6 car.
It wouldn't be a straight swap, no, but it's easy enough, as all the mounts just bolt in, no welding is needed.

Might aswell get 2.0l brakes at the front would cost roughly the same as 1.6 1s at a scrappy

Well at £1600 i guess it will be a while before i start thinking about converting.
What do you do about insurance after converting ? Do you have to phone them up and just tell them that you changed the engine ?

my mate knackered his engine on his 1.4 had 1.6 thrown in with 33k on clock for 925 in the end from a vauxhall garage - not main dealer and 3 month warrenty

You'll have to change the engine number/cc on the V5, then send it back, then let the insurer know.
Thing is, it might cost more to insure a converted car than it would to insure a car which originally had the engine.
CorsaB4ever, was that labour only?

im pretty sure it is trickier to convert the 1.0 corsa to a higher engine than any of the other engines in the range

its mainly just the wiring that's the main problems, im sure
chassis the same, will just need a diff rad too

wiring is differant on 1lts and ECU is in the engine bay
that the only differant.........
