take all the plugs out. then put a long screwdriver in the hole over cylinder 1 (cambelt end), turn the engine over by hand, and watch the screwdriver rise up, then it'll slowly fall down, when it starts to do this, go back to the highest point, and that's TDC.

Normally there is a mark on the crankshaft pully..I believe piston 1-4 will both be on tdc at the same time...

Some people take the spark plug off and use there finger, turn over the engine and when you feel the pressure then you are CLOSE to tdc...
But if its something important you need to be more accurate

I believe also you can get a piston whistle it may have another technical name...not too sure

You put the whistle in the spark plug hole and when the piston is tdc it whistles not sure about this method tho as it was a wile back at college...

Are also other tools like a piston stop and a degree wheel

If the heads off the engine then there is a dial indicator tool you can use which is very simple

just remember:

tdc isnt the same as the mark on the crank pluuey, vaux timing marks are about 20 degrees out from tdc.

only real way to determine true tdc is to use a dial gauge with a pushrod.
