Came to work this morning and the lights were off, no queue for the lights in any direction, cars there but I gave way to a few then pulled in front of one who let me go. Safe to negotiate and it didn't take 2 minutes sitting there, and I didn't have time to think about not crashing and get angry with anyone.

Cure for road rage and congestion anyone?

After the floods in Carlisle the traffic lights on the roundabout in the centre of Carlisle were damaged and they noticed the traffic seemed to flow much better so they left them off for a trial period. It worked alot better.

Haven't been to Carlisle recently so don't know if they have turned them back on or not!

making drivers think and consider what is happening on the roads rather than driving blind only looking for a red or green light....

seems to work then!

It certainly does, when the lights are out on junction 11 or 12 of the M4 there are no tail backs, everyone gives way to the right like at roundabouts and congestion is no exsistant.

not when you get a learner in front of you on a busy traffic evening waiting to emerge on the main road

One over the A64 too, you can't get all the way round without the lights stopping you

and the lights change that quickly so when someone tries to beat them they slam the brakes on at the last min and you nearly go into the back of them lol

Hmm...I'm not so sure. All the places i've seen that have the lights out have been mayhem! you have to take your life in your hands when pulling out! Theres probably some circumstances where they would do better without...but the majority i think wouldn't.

There is a new junction in Biggleswade with traffic lights for the new ASDA - traffic is always piling up in both directions into the town centre and coming over the bridge by Pizza Town. Without the traffic lights, as they have broken occassionally, it is fine.

In contrast though, they have put in a new traffic light system at the Letchworth junction on the A1 and the traffic doesn't queue down the slip road and onto the A1 any more.

There's too much nannying from the government when it comes to driving. People would become better drivers if there wasn't so much paint/signs/distractions all over the road.

I remember one village where they removed all paint from the roads, and as a result, people paid more attention on the way through, speeds decreased and accidents were almost completely eradicated.

It mentioned this in AutoExpress.
When traffic lights died, traffic was flowing through a lot more fluently.

Suppose the only thing is, where would pedestrians cross?

Milton Keynes people, the roundabout with traffic lights next to the Hockey stadium just off the A5..... Fooking nightmare, can barely get around without stopping.

It depends on the amount of traffic, it works on smaller routes, but like Pete said, do it on busier ones and it goes to pot

take it none of you have tried driving round central london, cause of Ken Livingstone there is so much more congestion.

he has timed the traffic lights so some can make u wait 1-2 mins for a simple cross junction where you should wait a maximum of like 30 seconds may not sound like alot but when your in a car its very annoying and unneeded

After a few accidents on the round about during peak times they have switched back on the lights.

But thats 7-9am 3-5pm kind of times.

Rest of the time its just breeze through its much less stressful with the lights off and faster moving.
