Who have you heard your club strongly linked to but never ended up signing?

Two for us are Roberto Carlos when Roy Evans was in sole charge of the club, but he decided to sign Phil Babb instead

The other was Eto'o back in 2003 when he played for Real Mallorca. Utd were sniffing round him and he went on press saying he would love to play alongside Owen at Anfield (linky). Houllier decided to sign players like Diouf for 10m instead

i remember when ipswich were supposed to have signed hassan kashloul (sp) but he decided not to join whilst he was on holiday.

Only two players I have ever been pissed on us letting go were McManaman as it was on a free, and Owen as we only got £8m for him when we could (should?) of sold him the previous summer for £25m++

Essien was training with Burnley about 4 years back. He'd been on trial at Man Utd, and spent qa few days after at Burnley training while waiting to return home. Maybe could have signed him but at that time work permit was a problem - probably why Utd didn't move for him either.

so so many

Shevchenko (sp) and salas were both on trial at west ham

so was del'assendro, Sol campbell and terry were youth players at west ham, along with adams, parlour, kieran richardson
