Hi,

Does anyone know what happens if you get caught by a speed camera in france? My mate has just been flashed by one on his way back.

Thanks.

well I suppose he could always say in his defence that he made the mistake of reading their speed signs thinking they were in mph, as they use the metric system over there dont they?

if i remember correctly it was one of two things. it was either 1. they couldnt do anything as you were no longer in that country or a resident of that country, in this case france, or 2. they couldnt give you points but could issue you a fine!

Foreign speed cameras: points on British driving licence?
What happens if I am caught by a speed camera abroad? Do I get points on my licence?

Answer:
It seems that at present, you are unlikely to get points on your licence but it is believed that there are measures in the pipeline to correct this "loophole."

Also be aware that if you are stopped by police for speeding in countries such as France, you may be fined on the spot and in cases of very high speed, your vehicle may even be impounded.

He might get a fine, but being as they would have to go through our DVLA to get contact details I doubt he will. No points though.

If your stopped you'll get on the spot fine, no points.

Because hes not in the country he wont get the fine, my brothers bird has got a Irish drivin licence and has been living here since 2000, she went through a speed camera here in Liverpool and when the fine came through my bro sent it back saying she had returned to Ireland (south) and he had no contact with her anymore... no more was said...

Foreign driving agencies/governments actually hire companys who have access to the dvlas database and then hire bayliffs in this country to collect fines, reposess/ conviscate.
They use this method for parking tickets, speeding fines etc.
So they can catch up with you.
