Also what about de-coking - or is that what im basically doing, getting rid of hydrocarbon deposits

gunk would get the loose stuff off, the harder stuff would need attacking with powertools.

definatly spend a good few hours with wire drill then give it a laquer to stop it from oxidising

To reseat your valves, get some Chemico grinding paste, and cover the mating face of the valve in a decent layer, not too much though.

Then put the valve in the block, and lock it into a power drill. Spin the drill up slowly, and gently back the valve up against the head.





Worked fine for me.

If you want to clean up the valve itself, you can use some wire wool and hold it on the valve as you spin it in the drill (do this out of the head obviously). If there are any tough deposits, use a small fine oilstone to blitz it off.

take it to a machine shop and ask them to put it in their washing bath.

will cost a few quid and comes out shiny and new
