Fill in the gap with some expanding foam. Go over it with some fibreglass matting and resin. Use lots of resin because it will sink into the foam. Put a few layers on to get some strength then sand back the excess material. Go over with some P38 body filler to get smooth.

Remember to key up the plastic with an angle grinder or some 80 grit wet and dry or the fibreglass will com straight off.

note use as little p38; filler as possible and dont get it wet; you need to do all the work in a clean environment.
Filler draws water in like a sponge and if you paint over the top of it; it'll not key properly

Make sure you buy decent fibre glass materials though. If you go cheap you'll end up with it becoming too brittle if you use a lot.

And as obvious as it may sound, when you've smoothed it and are fitting be careful not to twist it or force it. Because of the fibre glass it will be more rigid and prone to cracking.

Fibre glass matting will be the best, easy to use without having to use way too much.

If you got any marine/sailing shops near you they'll be your best bet, will cost a little more but it will show in the results.
Their stuff is a little more flexible than your average fibre glass matting kit.

You shouldn't need loads and loads cos of the type of material, it goes quite a long way on not much. They'll come in various size packs but will come with a roll of the matting, will be fairly easy to judge.

Dont worry about buying too much, you tend to find a use for it somewhere along the line.
