What damage can be done if your engine runs out of water? Happened to the mini over the weekend. Instead of stopping and filling it when cool, mum kept going (for about 8 miles) till she got home. Dad filled it up yesterday and said everything seemed fine. She drove it this morning and it broke down, steam pouring from it again and now it won't start Any ideas what damage might have been done ?

Probably just buy a new head tbh.
Get it looked at properly though could've done more damage especially if it was cooking for a bit

ohh an old mini?
The heads tend to be ok on them due to the steel heads rather than aluminium so they dont tend to warp.
when my gf's went it was due to a blockage in the tiny rad on them, so she ordered a larger 4 core one and its been fne since

Thanks folks, when it happened again this morning there seemed to be water pouring out of somewhere near the front of the engine at the right hand side, near the tank where you fill the water up

headgasket.... sounds likely...
But a coolant leak could cause the car to run hot.drain fluids.... BUT running it with no water can lead to warped head and head gasket probs....
not to mention oil/lube probs if the oil temp was high/cooked

Well according to what she said, the amount of steam coming from it when she stopped was unbelievable
I think a box of matches might be the next step

not really.... steam is water vapour... so there was some water!!!!
fill it up with water, try and see where its coming from...
If its a hose, fix/replace and then test drive close to home and up to temp.
If its coming from the engine it'll be a new head gasket needed, head skimmed

Just spoken to her...........managed to get it started but the pressure of the water is forcing the water to shoot out the plastic bottle thing that you put the water in (with the cap tight on btw)
Oil has been checked and it seems fine, she was told if it was a creamy colour that meant trouble

Water needs to be blead aswell, you cant just fill it up if its emptied itself it will be full of air & not work properly!!
