I'd do a 1.2 8v -> 2.0 16v XE conversion for £800 quid. Everything supplied. Or 1.2 8v -> 2.0 8v 20SEH (SRi 130 engine) with Kent road cam for £700.

My nova was an xe but is now a turbo, in doing this I have spent the following
hubs, shafts and solid mounts, £210
calibra turbo £500
new quaife diff and f28 bits £570
frontera cooler £50
gaskets and oil change stuff £50
slim fan £22
lightweight flywheel £245
£1700 for going from an xe to 6spd turbo. I know the diff is an option but my last atb went wrong when a bearing failed in the gearbox so had to replace it.

Will have missed stuff but so far my nova inc everything from tax to mots and buying the car has cost me £7800 over the past 2.5yrs although got to get £750 back soon for my old xe engine
