clamp a peice of scrap wood on either side of the timber, and start to cut the housing out

What the crap is woodtrades homework. Pleases tell me you aren't doing one of these crappy college crash courses when you claim to be a tradesman after 6 weeks?
Anywho.
1) stop work and inform site manager, supervisor. Failling that if you are the manager, speak to the client and/or architect.
2) Checks a frame is square by measuring the diagonals, its usually a thin piece of timber with a point or nail near the end. You put it across one diagonal, make a mark and lay it across the opposite diagonal. If they are the same your frame is square.
3) Bit of a stupid question really, if your tools are sharp there should never be breakout as long as you cut from the face.
4) No one has ever used a brace and bit since about 1984, another stupid question. All I can think of is so it doesn't fall out and so it sits properly in line with the chuck.

We still use braces at college lol. Work in from both faces when cutting housings to prevent breakout.
