This may be a stupid question, but was wondering if its always been the case that tax is based on emmisions?

Watched a program last night on CH4 and they argued that carbon dioxide has nothing to do with global warming & climate change

Nope, used to be on engine size, until about 2001/2002 IIRC.

All cars reg'd before 1st March 2001 weere done on engine size, up to 1400cc or over 1400cc being the thresholds, after that date, it was based on emmissions.
