INSURERS WEIGH UP PREMIUMS

Drive a heavy car and you could soon be hit with a heft premium. Thats the message from the industry, which is including vehicle weight in new group ratings for the first time.

Used to calculate the cost of motorists' cover, the standings are getting thier first overhaul for 15 years. The Association of British Insurers (ABI) says that the extra premiums are needed on because they cause more damage to the road, pedestrians and other motors when involved in accidents contributing to the rising cost of claims.

The shake-up which has also been prompted by a massive increase in the range of new vehicles and parts, is set to bump up the number of insurance groups from 20 to 50. An ABI spokesman said: " the wider number of ratings will give cover providers more scope to fine tunes quotes in order to better reflect modern vehicles and thier actual risk on te road."

But the Association of British Drivers countered " this is simply an excuse to increase premiums" Insurers claimed it was too early to predict exactly how much prices would rise, as the new groupings will not come into effect for another six months.

Examples of insurance group changes :

Mini Cooper group now ---- 8 New group ---- 21
Ford Focus TDCI group now ---7 new group --- 15

DISCUSS!!

I cannot see why they feel the need to increase the group by such a large amount and make people pay more when the risk remains the same

if theres 50 groups instead of 20 then the two examples above wont be more expensive will they? Unless group 20 of the new way is the same cost as group 20 of now, which would be ridiculous!

Sounds about right. The system could do with a bit of an overhaul seeing as it's 15 years old...

Mine hasn't been re-classified! Not sure if its because its too old (1994)?

I think its all been done to help classify cars that are all under the current group 20 umbrella. A lad at my work has an Evo8 which is now a 20, it jumps to a 44 under the new scheme. So in theory it might be cheaper to insure...maybe.
