What is your earliest positive memory in regards to football?
(if a personal memory probe further)
Scoring a hat-trick at the age of 7 in a junior school game
What is most treasured memory in regards to football? (if not a personal participation memory please give that as well)
Being scouted by Corinthians Juniors and receiving my first team shirt with my name and number on (Jizinho 10)
What is your earliest negative memory in regards to football?
Losing the ball and an opposing team scoring from it, I was only 7 or 8 and some of the mums and dads on the sideline said things and I heard them, wasn't nice at that age
What is your worst memory in regards to participation in football?
Damaging a cruciate ligament when I was 14, missing the UK all schools competition finals, what made it worse is we lost in the semi's to a bunch of cheats from Swansea.
Social
Have you made friends in the past through football?
Loads, I don't just join teams with people I know, I'll join any team regardless of me knowing anyone there, plenty of footballing friends both in UK and Brazil.
Do you consider your team mates as friends?
Not all of them, I don't interact with my current teammates off pitch, recently changed teams and don't really know anyone yet.
Do you socialise outside of football with your team? If yes is it always related to football?
No
Intrinsic and extrinsic rewards
Is it important to you that you win when playing football?
Not all the time, aslong as I've enjoyed it
What emotions do you feel when you win?
I love being a winner, but if we've earned it, then the rewards are more meaningful
Draw?
I base my emotion on the way I've played, if I have played well and I'm happy my team-mates gave 100% then thats fine
Lose?
Again If I played well I don't mind and just take it on the chin, but if I feel my teammates have not pulled their weight I can get annoyed
Do you enjoy training? If no, why not, if yes is there any particular aspects?
I like training, gives me the opportunity to try new things, ideas and get to know the way my teammates play
Give examples of times where you have felt a sense of achievement?
I suppose every game you win, where you have played very well you will feel a sense of achievement because people notice it and comment on your performance
Have you ever lost in an important game?
Yes, lots of times, more so in my younger days when I was trying out for Brazilian league teams as a boy, certain state finals and some Paulista cup losses
If yes what kind of emotions did you feel?
Anger and embarassment, anger at the people who didn't try and losing to below average teams
Escapism
Lifestyle choice or escapism from the real world?
Lifestyle choice, but I see it as my time to be centre stage
Physical health
Health benefits play a part in choosing to participate?
Not really, I'm very fit and healthy anyway, just the love of football drives me to play
Do you worry about injury having an impact on your everyday life?
No, I see an injury as just a part of the game that can't be helped, there comes a time where I'll be old and unable to play at all, so I should just play as much as I can as I don't know how long it will last
Enjoyment
At what level/age of football did you find you enjoyed participating in most?
I would say in my early years for teams I played for in Brazil, the style over there gets rid of pressure, pressure can ruin a players game and in the UK if you lose the ball, the mentality is to blame the player and get on his back, in Brazil that is frowned upon
Is there any part of participating in football that you do not enjoy or any part in the past that you have not enjoyed?
I don't enjoy it when a certain opposing player just wants to foul you, or make threats. I also don't enjoy team-mates getting on my back in a game because I did something wrong or chose the wrong pass.
Challenge
Skill development through participation?
I would say so, I work hard in training, competitive games and even in a kick around, I always look to improve and find new skills
Do you feel your participation has helped you develop as a person?
Yes, you have to work as a team, teamwork and team understanding is key, without it you will lose
How would you feel if you were told you would not be able to play football again?
Football is 50% percent of my life, I would be heartbroken and I don't even think that is a strong enough word
Feelings when not selected to play?
If I'm told I won't be playing, firstly I will think about the tactics in the choice, if I feel it;s for the good of the team I won't moan or be selfish I will just hope I get on as a sub. But if I think it's because of personal reasons then the team is not being thought about then I will voice my opinion and just generally feel rubbish about it
Feelings when injured?
Frustration, impatience when not back in time for a game, and sometimes anger against whoever injured me

Yes...good mates are from the footy team...we go out on the piss together...etc..
Intrinsic and extrinsic rewards
Bit of both?
Is it important to you that you win when playing football?
Yes...I HATE getting beat...I have always said that as soon as I am unable to play to a decent standard I will hang my boots up...I wont be one of them fat old men still playing at 46 in a veterans league...I wouldnt enjoy that type of football...I like playing attractive football...fast and flowing...etc

Bit of above and below

Have you ever lost in an important game?
Yes...few cup finals...and important league games...
If yes what kind of emotions did you feel?
Sadness....anger...disappointment...
Escapism
Lifestyle choice or escapism from the real world?
Yes...no matter whats going on in your life...for 90 mins you forget everything...Lifestyle choice...I have always played organised football from the age of 8...so it just seems natural to me and is a way of life to me...
Physical health
Health benefits play a part in choosing to participate?
Not really...I love football and would play it even if it didnt make you fit...BUT its a good added bonus...

Not really...although when it does happen it can impact on your everyday life...(still injured now 5 weeks ater hurting my foot...strained ligaments etc..)
Enjoyment
At what level/age of football did you find you enjoyed participating in most?
14-22 was when I played the most football...however I still enjoy it just as much now however it doesnt take up as much of my life as it did back in that age range...
Is there any part of participating in football that you do not enjoy or any part in the past that you have not enjoyed?
No cant think of anything...but right now im hating having to watch the lads due to being injured...
Challenge
Skill development through participation?
Yes you can improve as a player the more you play...however this is down to getting used to certain movements...however I beleive everyone can play up to a certain level...once reached I think no matter how much you play you wont improve anymore...
Do you feel your participation has helped you develop as a person?
Yes...I have a good network of friends through my football...also taught me to be disciplined...gave me good networking and communicaiton skills...
How would you feel if you were told you would not be able to play football again?
Very very sad...I would not want to think about it...there is a difference between being told you cant play again (through no fault of your own) than deciding yourself its time to call it a day...
Feelings when not selected to play?
Err...cant describe it...anger...feels like a personal attack...disappointment...
Feelings when injured?
I feel left out when injured...like im not part of the lads...even though I am....frustration....I always try to come back too early as I just want to play again....

Hope this helps!
Background in regards to football,
Could you please give a brief history of your participation in football? As in your first experiences of playing the game, when you first played for a team, your first competitive match etc. - Started playing at junior school when I was about 7. I played 11 a side football for a local youth football club and then went onto play men's football when I was 15. I progressed into County football when I was 18 and made a number of appearences for a few different clubs inc. Littlehampton, Haywards Heath, Arundel etc. I then moved on and play Southern League football in Surrey but the travelling became an issue so I dropped back into County league football with East Preston, Steyning Town and now Wick.
Long term aim is to step back up and play Ryman league football due to the shorter travelling distances than Southern league.
What is your earliest positive memory in regards to football?
(if a personal memory probe further) - Probably scoring my first goal in men's football then going on that season to score more goals than games played.
What is most treasured memory in regards to football? (if not a personal participation memory please give that as well) - Running my own Sunday side for two years and winning promotion and reaching a cup final in our first season. Joint with that was scoring the winning goal in the semi final to reach that final - great moment.
What is your earliest negative memory in regards to football? - Losing 22-0 against our under 11 rivals!
What is your worst memory in regards to participation in football? - Probably during a game against Paulton Rovers. I had a shocker, was dragged off at half time and royally abused verbally by the manager. Not a nice experience for me, and it actually proved to be my last appearence for the club.
Social
Have you made friends in the past through football? - Lots. Mainly through running my own Sunday side although I have a few mates that I keep in touch on the county league circuit.
Do you consider your team mates as friends? - Not really, one is a friend the rest are just friends when I'm at football.
Do you socialise outside of football with your team? If yes is it always related to football? - Yes and no, race nights, drinking etc.
Intrinsic and extrinsic rewards
Is it important to you that you win when playing football? - Always
What emotions do you feel when you win? - Depends on the game, usually happy!
Draw? - Depends on the importance of the point
Lose? - Angry, usually with myself!
Do you enjoy training? If no, why not, if yes is there any particular aspects?
Give examples of times where you have felt a sense of achievement? - Probably making my debut for Egham Town
Have you ever lost in an important game? - A fair few when I suffered a relegation from Southern league
If yes what kind of emotions did you feel? - Gutted although it was on the cards
Escapism
Lifestyle choice or escapism from the real world? - probably life style choice, although I do look forward to Saturdays
Physical health
Health benefits play a part in choosing to participate? Keeps me fit
Do you worry about injury having an impact on your everyday life? Not really although I work for myself and don't need to walk
Enjoyment
At what level/age of football did you find you enjoyed participating in most? Probably early adult years 17-19 when I played for my home town team.
Is there any part of participating in football that you do not enjoy or any part in the past that you have not enjoyed? - Training and travelling. Never liked training and sat on a coach for hours at a time didn't appeal to me.
Challenge
Skill development through participation?
Do you feel your participation has helped you develop as a person? - Maybe, probably team work skills have improved
How would you feel if you were told you would not be able to play football again? - I'd be gutted but the most important thing is to be able to walk etc, if that means giving up football through injury then so be it.
Feelings when not selected to play? - Angry, downhearted even think of giving up.
Feelings when injured? - Frustrated really, feel like playing when injured!

Background in regards to football,
I started playing at the age of 7 for a team that a friends dad started up for all his sons mates. Instead of kicking around in the street, we were training and playing Sunday games… I have played all my life and am now 21 still playing Sundays.. but purely for enjoyment now.
My first goal against our league rivals and I scored two in that game.
being picked for trials at various clubs… never making it really apart from a few that were too far to travel regularly. And scoring 6 in one game.
must have been under 7s playing in ice cold winds and hail and crying cos I was so cold.
playing in goal and conceding six in the first half! :
Social
yes football has provided with many of my closest friends.
every team member is my freind
I always socialise with my football team mates. And we all bring girlfriends etc too.
Intrinsic and extrinsic rewards
Yes very important I wudnt play if I was happy with loosing
What emotions do you feel when you win? Proud, and a good team sprit, strong bond with team mates.
Draw? Depends on how we have played etc. but usually content and pleased, but disappointed.
Lose? Gutted it really effects my whole day
Do you enjoy training? If no, why not, if yes is there any particular aspects? I do enjoy training no particular aspect, just the going out seeing friends and knowing we are improving.
Give examples of times where you have felt a sense of achievement? Being offered trials at various clubs, receiving man of the match awards… every time some one says you had a great game etc.
Have you ever lost in an important game? Yes this season we played a semi final of our league cup, and I made a mistake at defence where i play from which they scored… we lost by one goal and I felt like the whole game was my fault.
If yes what kind of emotions did you feel? I felt stupididity for the silly mistake and anger. I also felt a bit insecure as I dint want the team to blame me… but being such a strong team that made me feel fine about it.
Escapism
Lifestyle choice or escapism from the real world? A bit of both I think… I love the lifestyle but its also nice to get physical and something different
Physical health
Health benefits play a part in choosing to participate? Obviously any exercise is a health benefit… its not why I play though.
Do you worry about injury having an impact on your everyday life? Nope.
Enjoyment
At what level/age of football did you find you enjoyed participating in most? Erm I playing Sunday football now which is most enjoyable… I used to play quite high standard of Saturday football but found it hard to bond with the team like I have my new team.
Is there any part of participating in football that you do not enjoy or any part in the past that you have not enjoyed? Paying! I hate having to pay £5 a week plus sign on fees… to play something I love when pro’s get thousands a week, and show no passion for the game.
Challenge
Skill development through participation? definately not just physical football skills but, communication and social skils too.
Do you feel your participation has helped you develop as a person? definately
How would you feel if you were told you would not be able to play football again? Gutted.
Feelings when not selected to play? Disappointed but I believe in playing the best team to win. Although its rare im not selected usually.
Feelings when injured? Touch wood not really been injured in quite a while. But id say sad that im missing out, and excitement at getting back into the game.
