Grass is a mess, owner before had a dog and liked to dig it up

Was going to re-turf bought thought I would give it a go with seed myself..

What I was going to do
1.) Rake over grass
2.)spreads loads of seeds
3.)Rake it over again

then wait

Whats the best way? any gardeners on here...

I just wanted a random excuse to post in this section of the forum hehe

But what you said in your first post sounds about right to me.. there are obviously different sorts of grass seeds so you need to see what type of grass you have.

have a search on google for sewing grass seeds

I got a big bag of mixed grass seed a couple of years ago as my grass has always been crap - I just got all the weeds out first (a lot of dandylions so a lot of big holes in the grass) and my grass has always been riddled with moss so got a moss rake - this left huge patches of bare earth as there was no grass in those places - just moss!
I scattered the seed all over the lawn but put more in the bare areas, regular wattering and it did come up quite well but the moss came back last year, deciding against re-seeding it again I got some lawn treatment to try and kill the moss - which it did but now it's back
I reckon I'm gonna have to re-turf if I want to get rid of it completely

But yeah, re-seeding, pretty simple, pull all the weeds out first, then just get a large mixed bag (get a bag for twice what you need imo as a lot of seeds will get blown away, eaten by birds etc) and scatter them as equally as possible but heavier in patches that need it - then just water it as and when it's needed and voilá!
Grassy goodness!

Moss will always come back even if you re-turf it all.

Just got to keep treating it and over time it will eventually kill the roots off and it wont come back.

redone most of my garden last year. ITs easy as hell mate.

Need to dig over the area to about 2-3" deep, then put the seed down. Rake over and give it a good soak.

Keep it watered and it a couple of weeks you should start to see some little green specs. Then a few more weeks and you have a jungle

Garden at home is fookin huge now. Lots of hard work gone into it. Lots more to come too

You dont need to dig it, just rough it up a bit with a rake, throw it on generously as the birds will eat about one 3rd of it, rake it again and just keep it wet/midly moist dont drench it or youll wash it away, work as a gardener and thats how we do it!

moss only grows in damp places and in shaded places

if your grass suffers from either of the above it will come back...but if you keep raking it out in early spring every year it should start to fin out

i find when doin seeding the best thing to do is

1. prepare the area with a spring back rake

2. scatter seeds 1-1cm of soil is normally best

3. use fine top soil...if your ground is very clayie use a mix of sand/soil (this will stop the soil running of with the rain etc)

4 when the grass has come through and is about 3-4 inches tall its now ready to be cut

now is the best time (in the south) to be scarifie and re-seeding lawns...also now is the best time to use fertiliser and plant feeds etc this is because everything is comming out of domancy (bit like hiberation)
