I'm having a bit of trouble deciding what to do for my new engine...
a) brand new pistons and rings
b) use some second hand ones with new rings
I'll be having them machined whatever, as they need 2mm pockets in them, but what's best to use?
The new ones will cost about £150 + machining, the second hand ones will cost a lot less...
Will the second hand ones fall apart, or will they be ok (at 8.5k rpm) ?
This is probably the only item I can save money on really, and I'm just thinking that new new pistons is a bit overkill maybe?
Anyone want to put my mind at ease?

I'm just thinking that if (when? ) it goes bang, mashing a NEW piston will annoy me more than a second hand one?
New ones aren't that expensive though, and with shiny new steel rods, I suppose it'd be better, maybe...
That's the thing, I just don't know which is best

2nd hand pistons will be fine as long as they arent damaged in any way.

when I built my engine the 1st time round I used pistons that I had cleaned up from an engine with about 80k on them. now they have been out twice more and have probably done a further 40k.
or why not use some 1.8 16v components in the botttom end and create a 1.8 from the x16xe block

Because I'm on a budget
and the mapping will take longer, as I would have to have it mapped for me from scratch, instead of using Mark's map as a start
and I CBA with the hassle
