For a while it has been a bit of a grey area. Some people say "if the wireless network is unsecured then you are able to use it" others say otherwise.
My ex used to use someone else's down her street for almost a year  i even downloaded a few films using it

Thats stupid, if its there then why not use it? I think it should be the people who own the router's responsibility to secure the connection if they dont want the average joe using it. Loads of pubs round here have open wifi connections without specifically advertising it, like the glen where my mate lives, the connection if for the residents upstairs, or the hotel, but guests in the pub use it all the time without permission, should they be arrested?

I use the connection from the house behind use, whenever our router goes down.
IMO, it is their own fault for not securing it.

A mate at work uses his neighbours, to down load films etc, liek people are saying its their own fault to have it open etc.

no, but if you leave the front door open you should expect it !!
I dont use anyones wireless except my own. I just dont see the point, i can be in my house and have fastest connection, rather than use a neighbours which runs a lot slower.
but i agree if you don't secure it then you cant expect people not to use it. Its only when people hack through the wep key then it becomes a different issue  !

People just view computer crime as faceless, thus somehow less of a crime.
If I walked into your house and stole £100 you'd be pissed off right?
So if I hacked your computer, logged your login to online banking, then stole £100 straight from your account would that be ok because your wireless was insecure and it was your own fault?

In my apartment block I can pick up 4 wireless networks 
All secured tho

There are normally 7 or 8 in visible from mine although only one is unsecure.
If I attach my external antenna I can get about 50-odd and there are potentially a fair few to choose from. I would certainly prefer this approach to putting cardboard over my windows just to go on the internet in the middle of the night

Personally I think stealing bandwidth is bad and I would be annoyed if someone connected to mine and leeched a load of movies or something. Although I would have absolutely no objection whatsoever to someone stumbling across my open AP and using it to check a few mails. Problem is people will take the mick when they find one.
Worth noting though - its always been illegal and looks like it will continue to be so. Don't do it from a stationary motor vehicle
