I am trying to play files off my laptop to my tv, but they video is not showing up correctly.

They are connected correctly, as everything else on screen appears on the tv screen. Even VLC player itself shows, just not the actually moving images that I can see on the laptop screen.

Any ideas how to solve it?

Thanks

Some graphics cards can't output videos both on screen and out through the VGA port to a projector (or in this case your tv)

Switching your laptop only to output through only the VGA Port (by pressing something like Fn+F5)

This should work. I've seen this problem a few times to be honest

But it always used to work through Windows Media Player?

I just tried playing a file through media player which I know worked before, but it won't anymore?

I'm confused
