My friend uses it and says that the service is fine.

You ought to be able to use whatever ADSL router you like.

Your connection speed is normally dependant on the quality of your phone line in your area. In the UK BT seem to be insistant on laying crap quality cable whicg doesn't support high speeds. It also is dependant on how far you are from your telephone exchange. Where I live we only get about 1.9mb/s and they will never upgrade the line

Even if you have a good quality line the distance is still the major factor.
Unless the line is really really crap the distance from the exhange will have more weight.

If your current connection is an up to 8meg service you won't get much faster on sky.

hmm i might stick with just the sky tv package for now then lol!

my bulldog line is great, never had problems! even though the broadband speed will be similar from the two companies, my bulldog is £19.50 per month for 8mb and sky is offering £10 for 16mb!!

is it worth keeping my current one and be paying almost twice as much just for peace of mind and reliability etc??

It'll be the same most probably, I doubt you will get any faster as you will be connecting at your maximum, probably 5-6, that coupled with line attenuation and noise due to distance of the exchange will bring ur speed down to what you recieve at the moment,

The only thing you will gain is an extra £10 a month, so may as well

I'm right next to my exchange, literally 50metres away down the road.

BT said my line could handle 10MB so switched my line on full, yet I still only get about 5MB...I'm guessing it'd be no better if I changed provider?

What is your line synching at?

Do you have the original RADSL or adsl MAX?

If its RADSL you should get 8 meg by switching to a MAX package.

I have sky broadband and never had any problems. the speed all depends on your line and distance from exchange. I had 8mb bulldog and was recieving about 4.5 and the connection would drop at least once an hour for some reason. They never sorted it. Now have sky and recieving around 4.5mb and never disconnects. It was connected for 50days untill I decided to turn the router off and give it a break for a bit
