Can i plug the cable from the xbox into the back of my pc that is wireless? or does it have to go straight ino modem?

yes, you will need a crossover cable, not a straight through ethernet, and need to configure internet sharing

if you have a wireless router you should be able to just plug the xbox into that and off you go

Yes you can, port forwarding is a bit of an arse though.
I gave up and bought a wireless adaptor for £50!
