Complete novice when it comes to websites, but was asked to sort one out at work so obliged.
I've used dreamweaver 8 to design it and have also tried uploading using dreamweaver as well as cuteftp - but both times the website doesn't appear when i try to load it from a search engine.
Domain is not out of date, i've put all of the correct info in, web address / username / password etc...
I've set the main page as the 'home page' using dreamweaver but that didn't work either.
We did have an 'under construction' page up, if i delete that and then upload it again it works fine. Not sure what i'm doing wrong?
Any advice appreciated.

Assuming your not trying to search for your company within google or something? you actually typing in the website address from your default webpage.
It sounds like your index page is not there? your main page much be called either index.html or index.htm
This is the initial page that loads.
Post your address up mate.

Hmmmmm, can you take a screenshot of the contents of the public_html folder on the webspace where it is being hosted?
I think you may have just put the stuff in the wrong place or a filename is wrong.
If you give me the FTP addres and login details I will get it sorted for you
