OK, craig_brux asked if I could figure out a decent spec for a PC on a smallish budget that would be easily upgradable in the future. Just wanted some comments on this set-up....
Case: Enermax CA3030
PSU: 430w Seasonic S12-430
MoBo: Gigabyte GA-945PL-S3
CPU: Intel Core2Duo E4300
Memory: 2x 512MB Corsair PC2-4200
Graphics: Connect3D Radeon X1900GT
HDD: 120GB Western Digital WD1200JS
DVD Burner: Asus DRW-1608P3S
CPU Cooler: Artic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro
Comes to about £445 on Scan.co.uk but could possibly find some of them cheaper elsewhere (dont forget to factor in the extra shipping charges from various places though).
Also doesnt include a screen, keyboard and mouse so would have to factor them in ontop too.

actually mean to put that!
If your after more for downloading, etc. than gaming then cut down on the graphics card and go for a bigger HDD.

Any specs on what AMD are targeting? I know Intel are going for 1,333MHz FSB CPUs and DDR3 support.

Nope,
AMD's new oes are only due for servers in August, they will be october november for desktop.
The new Intel chips will be available 22nd july. A quad core will be available for £150 then.

AMD's new core Barcelona will be "True quad core" Meaning 2 duals cores stuck together where as Intels chip is 4 die's together.
It will have its advantages. But Intel also have The penryn and nahelm to come out which has 8 cores.
I hope AMD can produce because they are lagging in the GPU market badly

that mobo is a bit shocking though. If he wants it easily upgradable in the future when he gets more cash then thats going to hinder things!

Do people still upgrade these days?
I don't even think about that now.

if your starting on a limited budget and can only afford to do it in stages then yes.
If your going out and spending a fair wack in the first place then I doubt their is much need to upgrade unless you are a serious gamer/need it for work/an extremely great piece of new tech comes out.

The thing is Cosmo, in about a year socket 775 will be on it's backside. AMD are making their new CPU's work with AM2 as well as releasing AM3 plus DDR3 is soon to hit the shelves. There is never a good time yo upgrade and i see it as a waste of time.
John is right.
You may as well buy your best bang for buck first off.

A couple of years ago, I built this for £500.
Specs from what I can remember :
AMD Athlon XP 2400+ CPU
1.1GB DDR RAM
DFI Lan Party MB
128MB Radeon Graphics Card
120GB HDD
Was pretty good spec at the time.

Get a better CPU, that one is scraping the bottom of the core 2 duo barrel - not a conroe core. Personally I'd go AM2 with a X2 4600. I'd also get 1 x 1GB if he wants to upgrade, so he's not using up 2 slots.
