Moved house a few months ago and go sky installed, 3 normal sky boxes/multiroom.
Didn't want movies and sports and didn't want to pay a tenner extra a month at the time for sky+.
Literally the next week they announced that sky+ would now be free.
Got a couple of courtesy calls in which I voiced my annoyance at this, they weren't interested.
Got a phone call from somebody offering me half price movies and sports, I said i'll take them if you give me a free sky+ box, she said sorry I can't but phone customer services and they may be able to.
Phoned customer services who were as usefull as a chocolate teapot, nothing we can do bla bla, pay 130 quid and you can have it.
While phoning them I googled a bit and found a few email addresses at sky, sent an email off explaining the situation expecting nothing at all back.
Come in from work today saying that further to the email I had sent James Murdoch I would be getting sky+ fitted free on saturday
Summary, sent a random email, got free sky+

Maybe he's a relation of Rupert
I wonder if it'll work for me. I'm not a Sky customer yet though

You e-mailed Rupert Murdoch asking for a free Sky+ box. I like your style

w00t! £37 per month for EVERYTHING, HD, all channels. just need to save £300 for box now.
would i have to buy the box from them? cos they are £170 brand new on ebay (3rd gen).
Also, can you use the SCART for HD if you have a HD ready tV?

£10 for sky+ was only if you didn't have the movies or sports.
Do you not need one of them to get sky HD anyway?

I don't get why they were charging people for Sky+ thought. It's just hardware isn't it? Scam

They charge you 99 quid for the box, then if you didn't have movies or sports you were charged 10 quid a month for the sky+ features.
Paying a tenner a month for sky+ instead of the extra couple of quid for movies would just have been stupid, making people take out movies and sports I suppose.
I'm not exactly sure what other features you get either, can you not set it to record from your phone and the net etc?

Apparently, my parents have it and I can safely say I don't use it at all. Though i'm debating getting it when I get Sky in my flat as it seems like a good idea

Hate the new scam though.
Parents have been with Sky since the start and have always had the full package.
They have Sky+ and the new on demand service is coming soon.... and Sky sent my parents a letter saying that their sky+ box is too old to use the new on demand service, and if they wanted to take advantage of it, it would cost £100 for a new box.
Bunch o wankers they are.

Do you need a Sky+ box for On Demand? I guess that would make it a bit more worth while for me if that was the case.

You do indeed.
Anyone who manages to blag free Sky+ wont get on demand either... because when you blag it they send you an old reconditioned box.

We're in exactly the same situation. We've been with Sky for years and always had the full package, we have Sky+ and Sky Multi-room. I rang up the other day looking to get HD as well and asked if they would upgrade our old Sky+ box as we couldn't get on demand on it and they said no!
So I'm not paying the full price for every channel, Sky+, Sky Multi room, Sky HD and then not getting every service

you can get the sky HD boxes for £170 on ebay Link Is it worth risking it? they are quite expensive from sky! also would sky mind if i already had my own box and just signed up to the service?

Just realised one thing actually. I on;y have one Satalite plug in the flat as far as i'm aware. Don't you need two for Sky+?

Could probably use one, but then you will only be able to watch/record one channel.
Not everybody who blags sky+ is getting recons btw, i'll see what I get when it comes at the weekend.
I didn't even know anything about the on demand service, I don't care if its a recon box either if its free.

Flats can be very different.
May not be as easy as running another cable.

It's a communal dish on the roof and I don't think i'll be too popular if I get him to bring another cable down from the roof of the 18th floor into my flat, especially when they don't do cavity work

i was thinking of ringing them up and asking. Just say something like i came back from Uni, canceled my sky account and brought the box home with me.
The only thing i can see them saying is yes thats fine, but we're gonna charge you for installation or something

I can't see there being a problem.
All you need to do is ring up to associate the card with the box.
