Going to look at a corsa on saturday
Looking for the general things that go wrong with 1.4 16v sport versions inparticular. Anything inparticular to look out for engine wise....where are they prone to rust any where inparticular?
Any bad points about the car please list away

Cracked B pillars
Check for mayo like substance under oil cap
check coolant is topped up
check chassis rails are not badly corroded
check for oil leaks off the sump
just a fewbits.

headgaskets go on abused engines mainly, i.e not well serviced.
look for:
good service history
idle problems
clean engine bay
standard engines
later model cars are better (1998> )
you will know if its good when you see it, some seem good solid clean cars, others are dirty and rattle, hold out for a good one.

this is a 33k 99v 1.4 sport dave. FVSH apparently HPI clear. Had a quick look at it earlier in te week, not a wear on the bolster which is a good indication for starters. Completely standard too. I dont like buying modified cars as i dont trust the people that have done the work

Can you explain that quote?
How does servicing prolong the life of the headgasket.
When I first got my corsa many years ago it had done 37k with full dealer history the headgasket went at 38k.
When the headgasket goes on the 16v you will not get mayo in the oil you will get:
coolant loss
no4 spark plug siezed in
air locks in the water gurgling through the heater matrix

Surely it depends on how the head gasket goes? If the water way blows into an oil way you must get mayo

yeh common around 90-100k. i had a x14xe 1996 sport and head gasket went at 96k. also had lots of timing faults

The norm on a 1.4 16v s for the headgasket to go between number 4 cylinder and the water jacket havent seen them go anywhere else personally!

Yep went on the same place on my 1995 1.4 sport, funnily enough was around 95k when it finally let go. I knew it was on its last legs but managed to keep topping the coolant up every day and covered around 3000 miles with all the symptoms ( bubbling sound from behind heater matrix, constantly topping up the coolant, temp gauge always rising when moving and the header tank bubbling over when opened, also had a bit of poor starting due to the loss in compression) before it finally blew in the biggest pile of smoke Ive ever seen, had the new engine sat in the garage waiting for the day it finally went, was suprised how long it lasted though.

On this site there was a post topic not too long ago about the
sri 8v and sport
Many people said the 16v had problems with valves around the 70k mark...
Crank snapping is something i have only heard of in the scooter world, never would have thought of a car with a 1.4 engine having crank problems isent like there is masses of stress from a 1.4
But all cars are going to have faults
even if you got a 1.6gsi or sri 8v im sure there would be a few people on hear with the same problems around the same mileage.
Just try and get one with low miles and not many owners
